Demonstrate Me Where on the Doll the Employer Hurt Your Ego

Most hiring managers use several different interview tactics in case to judge your candidacy. Knowledge based interview queries are designed to see how much you know. Wild card interview queries are used to see how well you think on your feet. Logic based interview queries are designed to see if you’ve issue solving skills.

The kind of interview query most candidates dread, although, are questions that inquire you to look at yourself in a negative light. These queries come in two forms:

  • Weakness Queries
  • Stress Queries

Stress queries are considerably less common. They are developed to literally insult you to see your reaction. The employer will listen to an answer, and then respond with “Really? That’s your answer? Are you sure you do not need to try again?” The employer might love your answer, but inquires it in that tone to see if you get flustered. Stress queries are uncommon enough that we will neglect them for the purposes of this post.

Weakness Queries

Weakness queries are far more common. The employer asks you to point out mistakes about yourself, in case to see what you can come up with as a response. Instances of weakness questions involve:

  • What is your greatest weakness?
  • What is your fatal flaw?
  • If we select not to employ you, why do you cob that would be?

As implied, the employer needs to hear you say something negative. Or at least, they need to see how you manage a query designed to make you look like a worse candidate. Answering these queries seems complex, but is really fairly simple.

What the Interviewer Wants to Hear

Any time you experience a weakness query, the aim is not to give them with any information that would cause them to need to seek out another candidate. Rather, the aim is to give them something that no employer is going to hold against you. Also, you must always be confident about your candidacy. At no time should you act as though you’re not the person for the job. You require being confident that you’re the right candidate. Modesty isn’t acceptable.

Tips to Answer

Each individual query is going to have its own type of answer, so rather than give a general “how to” for answering weakness questions, let’s look at great answers for the instances above, and indicate what they have in common.

Q: What is your greatest weakness?

A: “My greatest weakness is possibly that when I’ve a great idea, I sometimes don’t feel free to share it in a public forum. I’d prefer to bring it up separately to my supervisor in private and by doing so I make it tougher for others to develop on my concepts. I’m presently working on being more open during company meetings with my concepts and strategies.”

Q: What is your fatal flaw?

A: “I’m always searching to improve myself, so I don’t believe any flaw can be truly fatal, because that would imply that I can’t learn to do the tasks victoriously. Although, I would say my greatest weakness is that I sometimes don’t feel free to share my great ideas…” (etc.)

Q: If we select not to employ you, why do you think that would be?

A: “I’m confident that I’m a great fit for the position, so if I’m not hired it would likely be because I didn’t do an adequate job explaining why I’m right for the role.”

Commonalities

All of these answers have the following in common:

  • They are all positive.
  • They are all confident.
  • They are all of minimal significance.

None of these are going to ruin your candidacy and you’re showing off the confidence that the employer needs you to have.

Whenever you confront a query about your weaknesses, or a question that inquires you to say something negative about yourself, do not give them an answer they can use or act as though you might not deserve the job. Demonstrate them you deserve the job and only supply them with information that is barely believed to be a flaw, if at all.
