In-depth Analysis of Book Review – Me 2.0: Build a Powerful Brand to Achieve Career Success

It should be no surprise that the Internet has become the major medium for job searching. It is not merely about applying to jobs and sending your resume through email to interviewers. The Internet is also how individuals network, how individuals get discovered, and how people effectively brand themselves to assist improve both their professional and personal lives.

Me 2.0” by Dan Schawbel seeks to give job seekers a chance to learn how to promote themselves online and offline in case to improve the way interviewers view their candidacy.

Contents of Book

  • Understanding what branding means to your professional life.
  • How to find your brand.
  • How to build and maintain your brand.
  • Job searching for generation Y.

Pros of Book

This is a book that is developed to appeal to college graduates. It is all over generation Y and the requirement to establish a personal brand online. Considering the dependency that Gen Y already has on the Internet, there is obviously a market for people to learn about how to establish a professional brand for themselves. Schawbel’s strength is his advice for your online persona, and the book does a great job teaching you not just how to develop a personal brand, but also why it is so significant.

Cons of Book

As with any book written straightly for college students, the rest of the population gets somewhat left out. It might still be helpful, particularly if you don’t know much about branding yourself, but it is significantly an introduction to branding, so seasoned professionals are unlikely to get any benefit. The book is also somewhat weird and there is not a lot of extra job search information within the book.

General Thoughts

Obviously “Me 2.0” has its downsides, specifically for long time employees. Even Generation X probably will not get much benefit, and fringe generation Y that has been in the workforce for various years now may get much value either. Also, when most individuals seek out job search books, they are searching for one book that encompasses everything they require knowing, and like most books, this isn’t it. What “Me 2.0” is, although, is a good introduction to branding, so while it should not be your primary job search book, it is a good supplement book.
